My collection for my Studio 2 class. We were tasked with the theme of a contemporary issue, and I chose sexual assault. I made it entirely out of recycled jeans, to show that after you’re assaulted, you can heal, but you are never the same. Just like the jeans, while they are still denim, I deconstructed them into looks that are completely different than jeans. I also made masks to show that victims often do not report acts of assault, and when they do they are often seen as monsters by those who don’t believe them. It is called broken resilliance because the event truly breaks you, and forces you to get over it quickly, without an option. You can never let it go, it will always be apart of you, but you are forced to recover.

My process involved cutting up all the jeans to get the pieces, and then PATCHWORKING them together to make a new fabric to cut out the pattern. I made each mask out of scraps as well. I burned the edges because as a victim, I burned the clothes I was wearing after the incident to cleanse myself of it.
